517 A retrospective audit into the implementation of CT as the recommended first-line imaging in the investigation of suspected Acute Bowel Obstruction in a Tertiary General Surgical Unit

Abstract Introduction The NCEPOD ‘delay in transit’ report 2020 explored the management of patients presenting with Acute Bowel Obstruction (ABO), highlighting delays at all stages patient care from presentation to management. CT scan as first definitive imaging was a key recommendation prevent delay decision making. Aim this audit investigate compliance and consequential making treatment. Methods Data requests for above age 16, provisional diagnosis ABO March-September 2022 included study analysed. analysed included: times admission, X-ray abdomen, CT, time treat (TDT). hypothetical (TDT) calculated if investigation instead X-Ray; being performed potential performance CT. Delays each stage were calculated. Results Between March September 2022, 37 admitted under surgery diagnosed ABO. median TDT when done prior 7 hours 3 minutes (IQR 4 32 16 42 minutes). 82% required after X-Ray Conclusion Our surgical service is yet achieve recommendation, Further education change practice are necessary implement raising physician awareness improve care.
